In the New Paper today was a person who had a place in NUS pleading for people to sponsor an overseas education for him, because he thinks Singapore is too small and he wants to see the world etc all that nonsense.

So, if you ask me, he is just a lazy bugger who is hoping for an easy way out in life.

While his claim that scholarships are only for those with "straight As and special papers" has some merit, his justification that as he cannot get a scholarship but has hopes and dreams to fulfill, and feels that Singapore is too small for him to fulfill those hopes and dreams, so someone should sponsor an overseas education for him is flawed. No, actually it is fucking bullshit. Who does not have hopes and dreams? Who thinks Singapore is too small and constrained? Not just you, buddy. Who else can't get scholarships and can't afford an overseas education without them? That's correct, the answer is once more, not just you, buddy.

He also seemed to disregard the fact that to go overseas, you must have overseas universities willing to take you, acting as if he already had plenty of offers but was a poor little puppy who could not take these up because his family could not afford it.

I, to make a massive understatement, seriously doubt this to be the case.

But that is the minor point. The major point is he is not fucking willing to get off his lazy ass and raise money for his own bloody education, but expects a good Samaritan to pay his way through university for him. He is perfectly able-bodied, judging from the photograph, and can work his way through university, assuming any overseas institution of higher learning is willing to take him in. I know quite a number of people (teachers and former teachers) who have done that. My form teacher in secondary school gave his last S$2,000 to help a friend in need, and worked his ass off getting through university in New Zealand. Granted New Zealand then had a generous welfare system, but the point still stands. If one is perfectly able-bodied, one is able to earn one's keep, and one should, instead of asking for handouts.

Not that anyone is going to help our esteemed friend though, with Singapore the society that it is. And for once, I am glad that is so. A lazy bastard like that does not deserve the easy way out in life.
