I always get the urge to blog after I read other people's weblogs. Hm.

Though I have many times criticised this country, this society and its people in the past, I do think Singapore has a few good points. The most important one, I feel, is (near) complete freedom of religion (well, I don't blame the government in the least for blaming weird cults that cut babies' throats in the dead of the night and do funny things with the ensuing blood). There is no national religion, and socially, people don't really care what religion you are. Very unlike a handful of other nations, one of which is the United States of America. I'm a committed atheist with plenty of Christian friends and that would be an oxymoron in many other places.

But speaking of religion. I do have a disgust for organised religion as it exists currently. I have nothing against the many people who adhere to these religions; they have every right to their beliefs. And the original teachings of these religions are very noble. But the institutions themselves, they are or have been as brutal and corrupt as any organisation where absolute power is concentrated in the hands of men can be. It is the fault of men, who as usual have twisted something noble and ideal to fit their own selfish ends.
