America's worst-ever military disaster, the attack on Pearl Harbor sixty-four years ago this day has been the subject of countless books, more than a few movies (none of whom are much good) and the usual motherload of conspiracy theories (FDR knew the Japanese were coming!). More than 2,000 Americans died that day, and it is quite possible that the world we know today owes itself to the very simple fact that the three aircraft carriers of the American Pacific Fleet were out on routine patrol and not in harbour that fateful morning.
Commemorate this day, then, for all the lives needlessly lost to mankind's inexorable greed and hubris.
